Our story

Some names deserve to be worn.

John Horse was a Black Seminole, born around 1812 in Florida, of African and Native descent. He fought the U.S. Army through the Seminole Wars, refused to surrender his people to slavery, and when freedom in America meant chains, he led them south across the border into Mexico.

In 1850 they founded Nacimiento de los Negros in Coahuila, a free town their descendants still call home.

John Horse Clothing Co. is a tribute to that legacy. Freedom over surrender. Honor Thy Promise.

From bondage in Florida to a free town in Mexico.

  1. 1812

    Born in Florida

    Son of a Seminole trader and a woman of African descent, John Horse was born into a world that called him property. He would spend his life proving otherwise.

  2. The wars

    Warrior and diplomat

    He fought the U.S. Army through the Seminole Wars, negotiated when he could, and refused to surrender his people to slavery, again and again.

  3. 1850

    Coahuila, Mexico

    He led the Black Seminoles south across the border to freedom, founding Nacimiento de los Negros, a free town their descendants still call home.
